It was previously called Assembly Line Communications Link or ALCL.

The cable with just the bare pin requires you to look under the dash and plug into the correct pin on the car side of the connector. Since the first circuit performance wasn't great and the whole thing was messy, instead of refining the first circuit i thought i should try a new design. Assembly Line Diagnostic Link or ALDL is a proprietary on-board diagnostics system developed by General Motors before the standardization of OBD-2. The ALDL cable with the male OBD1 connector shell will allow you to just feel under the dash and plug the cable in. This circuit worked, but for some reason the response was slow, i couldn't make it work with a Usb-to-Serial converter, and on some PCs you can't take power from Pin4 so you have to connect it to 12v external power source (the resistor stays).

The simplest ALDL interface circuit i could find consisted of one transistor and two 10k resistors it simply connected the data pin on the ALDL plug to the RxD(Receive Data) port on the RS232 on the PC through the transistor. Īldl has a port for sending data and the RS232 on PC has a receive data pin (RxD) so the easiest way is to connect them directly but since each system uses a different voltage we should put a transistor between them. OBD Diagnostics, Inc.I've always wanted to connect my laptop to my GMC van OBD1 based ECU, a little research on the internet lead me to a simple circuit that could make that happen. Compatible with GM OBDI data streams that use the 8192 Baud, Pin M protocol AND 160 Baud Pin E protocol. If you want the ultimate in compatibility for all years of OBD1 cars, including your 94 and 95, buy the bare pin cable. USB to ALDL CABLE Plug your laptop into the ALDL port of your 82 to 95 GM computer controlled car or truck and see what is happening under the hood. The cable you need will depend on the connector in your car, which changed over the 3 year F-Body OBD1 LT1 run. All the cables should have the ALDL connector on one end and a USB connector on the other.

This 16 pin shell cable will not plug into the 12 pin style OBD1 ALDL connector found on most 84 to 95 cars. The first one is a 12 Pin ALDL, the second is a 16 Pin ALDL (the third is a combination of both a 12 pin and 16 pin). If you have a 1996 or later obd-2 car, buy our OBD2 Allinone scan tool. The 94 and 95 cars that are equipped with the OBD2 style connector actually have OBD1 ECM/PCM systems behind them. This cable will not work on 1996 and later OBD2 cars! Although the connector style is the same, 96 and later cars use the OBD2 communications protocol, and are not backward compatible to earlier year cars.

The 8192 baud serial data comes off of pin 9 in these connectors. This +12v power arrangement allows us to build a simpler cable with no lighter plug +12v needed. Please check under your 94-95 car's dash and make sure it has the 16 pin style connector before ordering this cable.ĩ4 and 95 cars that are equipped with the 16 pin OBD2 style connector have built in +12v power coming off of pin 16 and ground coming off of pin 5. See our GM OBD1 home page for references and diagrams of the connector styles, or see the OBD2 diagram below. An ALDL cable is an OBD1 diagnostic scantool suitable for diagnosing engine fault codes and live engine data found in VR-VY Holden Commodores The ‘language’ spoken is called ALDL (Assembly Line Diagnostic Link), it is a very unique protocol that General Motors implemented on our commodores. This cable is the most convenient to use if your car is equipped with the 16 pin connector style, as it allows you to just feel under the dash to plug it in. This cable is for 19 OBD1 cars equipped with the 16 pin OBD2 style connector (Camaros, Firebirds, Corvettes, and LT1 equipped cars are a few), and has a 16 pin OBD2 connector shell to plug in under your car's dash to interface to your car's ECM/PCM. Plug your laptop into the ALDL port of your 89 to 93 Holden car, truck, or UTE and see what is happening under the hood.
